An electric bike on a farm track at the edge of the bush

The short version

Quiet is the whole advantage. An electric bike gets you close without engine noise or petrol smell, carries 200 kg of gear or game, and starts first time even after sitting for weeks.

Petrol bikes announce you from a ridge away and leave fuel smell hanging in still air. Both cost you animals.

An electric bike removes both, and still does the hard yards of getting in and getting the animal out.

Silent on the approach

No engine note and no exhaust means you can ride far closer before you are heard, then cut the last distance on foot. On a calm morning that is the difference between a shot and a spooked animal.

It is quiet enough to run near stock on farmland too, so access across a working property causes no grief.

No fuel smell to give you away

There is no petrol, so nothing on the bike smells of it. In still bush air that matters as much as the noise. You also store no fuel at the hut or on the property.

Carries the gear in, and the animal out

A 200 kg payload including rider covers rifle, pack, dogs and a boned-out animal on the deck. Low weight kept down low makes it easy to hold on a sidling track, and there is a reverse button for the tight spot you nosed into.

It also starts every time after sitting between trips, which a carburettor bike will not always do.

Commonly asked

Is an electric bike good for hunting?

Yes. The quiet approach and lack of fuel smell are real advantages for getting close, and the payload carries your gear in and the animal out. It also starts reliably after sitting for weeks between trips.

How far will it go on a hunt?

Up to 80 km on a charge depending on terrain and load, and it recharges off a standard socket at the hut or shed. Plan longer back-country trips around the range.

Is it quiet enough to get close to game?

Much quieter than a petrol bike. There is no engine note and no exhaust, so you can ride closer before finishing the stalk on foot.
