LFP Batteries on Farm Vehicles, Explained

LFP is the battery chemistry built for machines that work hard and live outside. Here is why it is the right call for a farm bike.

The short version

LFP (LiFePO4) is a lithium chemistry that lasts thousands of charge cycles, resists catching fire even when damaged, and can be run down flat every day without harm. It is a bit heavier than other chemistries, which for a farm bike is a trade worth making.

Not all lithium batteries are the same. The chemistry matters, and for a farm vehicle it matters a lot.

The Galvbike uses LFP. Here is what that means in plain terms.

Cycle life: years, not months

LFP cells typically last thousands of charge cycles before capacity drops below 80 per cent. Many other lithium chemistries are rated for only a few hundred. On a bike charged daily, that is the difference between many years of useful battery and a replacement after a couple.

Safety: hard to set on fire

LFP is far more resistant to thermal runaway than other lithium chemistries. It is much harder to make it catch fire, even when damaged. That matters on a machine that lives outside, takes knocks and crosses creeks.

Deep cycling: run it flat, daily

You can run an LFP battery down close to empty every day without significantly shortening its life. Other chemistries degrade faster under deep discharge. For a farm bike that gets used until it is nearly empty and then charged overnight, LFP is ideal.

The trade: a little weight

LFP is less energy-dense, so it carries roughly a 7 kg weight penalty for the same capacity. On a farm bike that is a deliberate, sensible trade: durability and safety over shaving a few kilos. More on range and terrain in range, battery and terrain.
