LFP Batteries on Farm Vehicles, Explained

LFP cells typically last thousands of charge cycles before capacity drops below 80 per cent. Many other lithium chemistries are rated for only a few hundred. On a bike charged daily, that is the difference between many years of useful battery and a replacement after a couple.

LFP is far more resistant to thermal runaway than other lithium chemistries. It is much harder to make it catch fire, even when damaged. That matters on a machine that lives outside, takes knocks and crosses creeks.

You can run an LFP battery down close to empty every day without significantly shortening its life. Other chemistries degrade faster under deep discharge. For a farm bike that gets used until it is nearly empty and then charged overnight, LFP is ideal.

What is an LFP battery?

LFP stands for lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4). It is a lithium battery chemistry known for long cycle life, strong safety against fire, and tolerance of being run flat regularly.

Why use LFP on a farm bike instead of other lithium?

Because it lasts far longer in charge cycles, is much safer, and handles daily deep discharge, all of which suit a working farm bike. The trade is a little extra weight.
