What a Galvbike Costs to Run
About a dollar a charge is the easy part. The money is in the servicing that never comes due.
The short answer
A full charge is roughly 3.5 kWh - about a dollar at typical rural rates, from a standard 10 amp socket in three to four hours.
But the charging is not where the difference is. It is the chain, clutch, gearbox, oil, filters and plugs that simply never come due.
Purchase price is the number everyone compares and the least useful one. What separates a farm bike over five years is fuel, servicing, consumables and the days it spends off the job.
Here is each of those on an electric bike, with the petrol equivalent alongside so the comparison is honest.
A full charge
Roughly 3.5 kWh from the wall at typical rural rates. No jerry cans, no trips to the pump, no fuel stored in the shed.

The servicing is where the money really goes
On a petrol farm bike the recurring list is chain adjustment, chain and sprocket replacement, clutch plates, engine oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plug and carburettor work. Every one of those is a part, a labour charge, or an afternoon of your own time, and they come round every year for as long as you own the machine.
None of them applies here, because none of those components exist. The complete service list is short enough to print on one line:
Pads and fluid
And they last longer than you would expect, because regen braking does much of the slowing - particularly on descents, where a petrol bike is wearing pads and engine braking instead.
Two, not four
Conventional sizes from any rural supplier. A quad wears four, and they are not cheap ones.
Swingarm nipples
Occasional grease through the nipples. Forks and shocks are conventional and may eventually need seals.
The downtime nobody budgets for
The cost that never appears in a comparison table is the day the bike does not go. No cold-morning starting, no flooded carburettor, no snapped chain in the back paddock - the failure modes that put a petrol farm bike out of action for a day mostly do not exist on an electric one.
During calving, a bike that will not start at 4am in the wet costs considerably more than a set of tyres.
Charging off farm solar
A Galvbike uses roughly 400 to 800 kWh a year in daily farm use. A typical dairy solar installation generates many times that, so the bike represents around one to two per cent of annual output. If you already have solar, you have more than enough.
Charge in the middle of the day
Power you use on site is worth considerably more than power you export. Putting the bike on a timer through the middle of the day turns generation you would have sold cheaply into fuel you would otherwise have bought.
You do not need a battery bank
A battery bank makes sense for other reasons, but the bike does not require one. It charges off a 10 amp socket and can simply be scheduled for daylight hours.
Generation drops, cost barely moves
In winter the bike may draw from the grid instead. At roughly a dollar a charge, that is not a meaningful change to the running cost.
Where to plug it in
Most people charge in the shed where the bike already lives. Overnight is the obvious slot - plug in after the afternoon milking and it is full by morning. There is no installation to organise and nothing to consent.

Think in five years, not one
Purchase price is a single line on a single day. Fuel, chains, sprockets, clutches, oil, filters, plugs and labour are the other line, and it repeats every year for as long as you own the machine.
